How to give an AI assistant a clearer brief
Original conceptual illustration
A useful AI request starts with the work you need done. Before writing a long prompt, decide what a successful answer should let you do: compare options, explain a process or produce a draft you can edit.
Provide a goal and relevant context
Describe the audience and the situation. “Write a welcome email for first-time customers of a small repair business” gives more direction than “write an email”. Add the facts the assistant must use, but leave out passwords, confidential customer information and details you are not authorised to share.
Specify the output
Ask for the format that helps you work: a short paragraph, a table or a checklist. State practical limits such as length and language. If a particular tone matters, provide a brief example instead of relying only on a vague adjective.
Review before using
AI can produce fluent statements that are inaccurate. Check names, numbers and citations against original sources. Treat the result as a working draft. If something is missing, identify the gap and request a focused revision rather than starting again with a more complicated prompt.
